Pilgrim Father/illegal son:  W/Y Gallery Exhibit Opening Reception
Friday, October 21, 2011 - 5pm to 7pm
W/Y Gallery at CPA, 1 Nassau Street, Unit 2, Chinatown

Artist Wen-ti Tsen’s exhibit, a 54-foot graphic mural with texts, in two parts, tells the stories of two illegal immigrants who came to America:  one, a present-day Chinese, who, overstaying his visa, has been living in the South Shore of Massachusetts and working different jobs for eight years; the other, William Bradford of 17th century England, who sailed on the Mayflower to New England without legitimate papers, worked to establish the first English colony at Plymouth, in Wampanoag country.  Both narratives are based on these two people’s first-person accounts.  And, both may well be described as “pilgrims”, the term Bradford first used for those leaving England, defined by him in this way:  “Strangers in the world, having left behind their own countries, look to find another, a better one, in a new country, hoping for God to provide them with a hospitable place.”
