What is being an undocumented immigrant like for you?
“It is impossible to find a job and without a driver’s license, it’s hard to go anywhere, including getting groceries. A lot of my friends know that I’m undocumented, they still treat me the same, they didn’t treat me differently. But it is hard to fit in with people that I’m not really close with... When my dad walked home from work and got mugged... we were scared and really couldn’t call the police. I don’t think the police are bad. I think if I am a citizen, I wouldn’t mind calling the police but because I am undocumented, I can’t.”
What does justice and safety look like to you?
“I think undocumented immigrants belong in the U.S. There has been a lot of negative connotations around the undocumented immigrants – that we bring crimes, drugs to the U.S based on a couple of people... I think there should be more community organizations and support groups. But the issue is that they are usually run by volunteers. Government offices should have more support for the undocumented communities by providing resources.
I wish for in-state tuition. It would make my life so much easier, making my current tuition half. I wish there was a way for me to drive. I want to get a job but can’t get it without social security. I should be able to get a job because I have 2-3 years of experience, and can speak three languages. But I can’t because of my status.”
